    The Q&A on this Product
QUESTION:  can I use this product on top of my fireplace mantle to screen off heat rising from my fireplace? I am trying to avoid heat damage to ornaments placed upon the mantle.
ANSWER:  As long as the mantle does not exceed 2000 degrees F, then this will work. A discussion of the laws of thermodynamics is need here. 1) Energy always flows from the area of high energy to the area of low energy until the energy levels are the same. 2) The rate at which the energy transfer takes place depends on the resistance to energy flow of the materials between the area of high energy and the area of low energy. In simple terms, if there is an air gap between what you are protecting and the heat source, then air will convect away most of the energy and the item will be protected. If it is direct contact with the insulation, which is in direct contact with the surface of the mantle, it will still get hot, although slower and in direct proportion to the ability of the object to dissipate the heat into the surrounding air. Give it a try and I think you will like the results - but it will not keep a pat of butter from melting - it will just slow it down! The object must be heat-resistant to some extent, i.e. non-flammable
